The Okanagan’s aviation landscape is about to grow in an exciting way. The BPL Legacy Association, founders of the KF Centre for Excellence, is partnering with Okanagan College to build a new $22 million aerospace training facility.

Designed to meet the needs of a rapidly expanding sector, the 42,000 sq. ft. purpose-built space will bring workshops, classrooms, and a full hangar under one roof. When complete, it will allow Okanagan College to increase its Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME) program capacity from 30 to 140 students per year by 2028, creating new pathways for learners to enter high-demand aviation careers.

A Vision Grounded in Innovation

For the BPL Legacy Association, this expansion reflects a long-standing commitment to advancing aviation education in the Okanagan.

Aviation has always been my passion. My goal has always been to inspire and prepare the next generation of aerospace professionals right here in the Okanagan. By expanding training opportunities through Okanagan College, we’re investing in people, our community, and Canada’s future in flight,” says Barry Lapointe, Founder & Chair, BPL Legacy Association.

The facility will be built beside the KF Centre for Excellence, further growing the Association’s presence. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2026, with students welcomed by September 2027.

Meeting Canada’s Growing Aerospace Needs

Last year, Canada’s aerospace sector contributed $34 billion to the national economy and supported more than 225,000 jobs. That demand is only expected to rise, especially with federal investments in defense and northern infrastructure.

Okanagan College’s AME programs, offered at both the Kelowna and Vernon airports, already train students in mechanical systems, engines, airframes, propellers, sheet metal, and composite repairs. The expansion will allow the College to build on these strengths.

“Hands-on, industry-driven education is what OC is known for,” says Dr. Neil Fassina, Okanagan College President. “By working together with the KF Centre for Excellence, we can provide an incredible learning opportunity for students while supporting a sector that is critically important across the country.”

More Space, More Opportunity

Provost and VP Academic Dr. Samantha Lenci says the College is exploring new options to meet labour market needs across the aerospace and advanced manufacturing sectors.

“Students are excited about this expansion,” she says. “Having new learning space at YLW allows us to enroll more students and support companies with the qualified, job-ready talent they need to grow and thrive.”

The College will continue operating its programs at both Kelowna and Vernon airports while expanding into the new facility through a long-term lease.

Looking Ahead

Under the agreement, the BPL Legacy Association is contributing $17 million toward the project’s capital costs. Okanagan College will work with government and community partners to secure the remaining $5 million.

This collaboration strengthens the Okanagan’s role as a space for aviation education, and adds to the momentum already underway at YLW Airport, with the terminal expansion, new parkade, and the upcoming Sutton Place Hotel.

The new AME training facility marks a shared commitment to building the future of aerospace right here in the Okanagan.
