We’re thrilled to share that the KF Centre for Excellence is now officially Biosphere CERTIFIED!

This international distinction recognizes our ongoing commitment to sustainability and the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – a milestone that reflects the care, intention, and teamwork woven into everything we do.

“Achieving Biosphere Certification highlights our role not only as an aviation centre but as a meaningful contributor to sustainable tourism in the Okanagan,” says Chris Lapointe, Executive Director of the KF Centre for Excellence. “It shows visitors that they can explore aviation history, innovation, and education in a place that values community, conservation, and responsible tourism. We’re proud to represent Kelowna on the world stage as part of this global network.”

Leading by Example

Achieving Biosphere Certification means more than earning a badge – it represents years of action and collaboration. Across our operations, education programs, and events – sustainability is a guiding principle:

Energy-Smart Building Design: From LED Lighting and automated exhibits to smart climate control, our building was engineered for efficiency.

Reducing Food Waste: Our new internal food waste policy ensures leftover catering from events is redistributed safely with local organizations serving the unhoused community.

Protecting Biodiversity: Our property features native plant species to support local pollinators and avoid invasive vegetation, reflecting our respect for the natural landscape surrounding the Kelowna International Airport.

Supporting Local: Whether it’s events catered by local partners or merchandise sources from regional suppliers, we actively promote community and local gastronomy.

A Shared Commitment

The Biosphere Certification process, guided by the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association (TOTA), helped us evaluate and enhance sustainable practices across our organization – from waste management to community engagement. Every department played a role in achieving this recognition.

We’re proud to join a growing network or organizations across the Okanagan who are working together to make tourism more responsible, resilient, and community-driven.

Looking Ahead

This certification is a milestone, but it’s also just the beginning. Our Biosphere Plan will continue to grow with new initiatives and measurable goals, ensuring we keep making progress toward a sustainable future.
