Celebrating 80 Years of the de Havilland Chipmunk

Public Display Open: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Join the KF Centre for Excellence as we celebrate 80 years of one of Canada’s most iconic training aircraft – the de Havilland Chipmunk.
On May 22, aviation enthusiasts, families, veterans, and community members are invited to experience a special public aircraft display featuring a beautifully restored 1956 de Havilland DHC-1 Chipmunk flown in by aviation enthusiast David Gillespie.
Originally designed and built in Canada, the Chipmunk became a primary trainer for Royal Canadian Air Force pilots and helped shape generations of aviators. The original DHC-1 Chipmunk first flew on May 22, 1946 – making 2026 the aircraft’s 80th anniversary.
David Gillespie’s Chipmunk, serial number 18023, served with the RCAF for 15 years before entering civilian ownership. Recently restored to its original RCAF condition between 2022–2024, the aircraft stands as a tribute to the legacy of Canadian aviation engineering and pilot training.
This outdoor display will take place on the Apron at the KF Centre for Excellence and is open to the public during regular hours.
