As the world marks the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day, the KF Centre for Excellence invites you to an unforgettable evening of history and reflection. Triumph & Tragedy: The Tale of WWII’s Most Accomplished Bomber, Mosquito ‘F for Freddie’ is more than an event – it’s a powerful story of resilience, innovation, and remembrance.
Celebrating VE Day: 80 Years of Remembrance
On May 8, 1945, Europe celebrated the end of World War II. After years of hardship, VE Day brought relief and joy to millions. Today, 80 years later, we pause to honour the bravery and sacrifices of those who fought for freedom.
Yet, VE Day is more than a date in history. It’s a reminder of the people and stories behind the victory — the pilots, crews, and aircraft that shaped the course of the war.
The Legend of F for Freddie: Triumph and Tragedy
Among these stories, few are as compelling as the tale of F for Freddie. This de Havilland Mosquito bomber earned fame for its daring missions and legendary endurance.
Nicknamed “the Wooden Wonder,” the Mosquito’s speed and versatility made it a feared presence in the skies. F for Freddie flew an astonishing 213 operations over enemy territory — more than any other bomber in the Royal Canadian Air Force.
However, just days after VE Day, tragedy struck. During a celebratory tour in Canada, F for Freddie was lost in a flying accident. What should have been a victory lap became a solemn reminder of the risks faced by airmen, even in times of peace.
At the event, aviation historian Richard de Boer will bring this remarkable story to life. With nearly 50 years of research, rare photographs, and personal insights, Richard promises an unforgettable presentation. His passion for aviation history shines through every detail.
A Living Legacy at the KF Centre for Excellence
The story of the Mosquito continues here in Kelowna. Thanks to the BPL Legacy Association, a beautifully restored Mosquito aircraft is proudly displayed at the KF Centre for Excellence.
This aircraft is more than a showpiece. It is a tribute to the designers, builders, and airmen who made history. It is also an educational centerpiece, inspiring future generations to learn about Canada’s contributions to aviation and wartime innovation.
During the Triumph & Tragedy event, we’ll highlight this special connection. Visitors will see firsthand how history comes alive at the Centre, where past achievements continue to inspire the future.
